Trying to catch that break

For years now I've been searching for a break.  Wither it was blogging (there was a time where the news was full of people that where able to make a living with it), writing screenplays and submitting to contest such as Nick Writing fellowship and Amazon Studios, starting my own company (Graffiti On the Sun), putting out a poorly produced children's album and I've entered countless contest.

But they haven't really giving me the results that I've wanted.

No I'm not talking about being rich from these things (though that would be great) what I've been hopping for is just to make a living off them.

Part of me wonders if I should just keep going or give up on any dreams of making it in life and just keep working my day to day job trying to make ends meet.

Of course even though I'm not really making money I can't really see stopping making comics for my company or writing.

So I guess I'm just going to keep on doing these things and come up with more things and maybe someday something will hit and I'll be able to make a living off it.

Then again maybe not

Getting my ish together

If you read my blog you know that my family recently lost the family homestead.

And this was just the latest in a crappy 10 years I've gone through.

But as of today I'm turning things around and I decided to talk about my progress on my blog.

Last month I got a new job and today I just got my first paycheck.  Though it looks like I'm short a few hours and need to fix that.

I also need to contact a freelance job I did a month ago and I have yet to be paid for.

Not really sure how I should handle this (I'm not much for confrontation)

give the poor an income and things well be better

This is an interesting experiment, in the mid 70s where the small Canadian town made sure everyone had an minimum income.

While the experiment was short lived the data should that giving people an income actually had good results.

During the GAI experiment, Dauphin had a dramatically lower rate of hospital admissions than similar communities in Manitoba.
Its high-school dropout rate fell and stayed down for a generation.
It had fewer accidents, serious injuries, arrests and convictions.
 Consultations for mental illness declined.
And, contrary to policy-makers’ fears, people in Dauphin did not stop working or reduce their hours to get “free” money from the government.
“In all of the indicators I could find for quality of life, people did better,” Forget says.

Over 60 years of one family living on the same street

One more thing about my old home.

It's been in my family since in 1951.  So to the Jackson clan it was a big deal losing the house.  Not only did me and my brothers grow up in that house so did basically my mom and uncle.

Now my family have moved on and left the street that we have lived on for decades.  It's a really odd things when you think about it.  I'm already wondering how the streets doing without us.

Goodbye 265

Well recently my mother's house...the home I grew up in is facing foreclosure.

I'm feeling extremely sad right now.

For the past few weeks everyone was scrambling to get things packed.  The house has become a haven for much of the families stuff.  It's been a lot of work and sadly many things are going to have to be lost.  This is a rather hard for me right now and I am sure it is rough on the rest of my family as well.  I know it is on my mother.

It 's odd there are some things that you think will be around for ever.  This home was on of those things that I always would be around.  I could always come to visit.  When times are hard there was always a place for me to go.  That's what I thought at least, sadly that's not what has happened.

Where mostly all packed, most of the stuff that we are taking has been packed and placed in their new homes or will be shipped out to brothers who are out of state.

Right now as I type this I am spending the night at the house more then likely for the very last time.  I told everyone that I wanted to finish some packing but the truth is I'm really having hard time letting go and I'm trying to hold on this house as long as I can.

For the past two weeks part of me felt like weeping for the lost of my home.  But I never did, until today.  Me and my mom came back to the house to do a little more packing and moving.  After moving things around try to find what's in a room that pretty much became a storage room over the years I took a seat on the staircase to lead up to my childhood bed room which was most recently my youngest brother's room.   My little brother placed a lot of items on one side of the staircase and for the first time in years.  I looked and the stairs and sat down on them.  This was something I often did when I was a kid and when I saw the bare steps I thought it's been ages since I sat down on those stairs.  When I sat down I wasn't ready for the emotional hit I was about to take.  I sat down and memories of the past came flying in.  I can't say the memories flooded in but they made a big emotional impact on me and I started to cry right their on the steps.

I don't know why it happened then, instead of earlier but it was a strong emotional punch of young me doing things.   Like sliding down the steps.  Maybe because I was to busy and today was the first time that things have winded down.  Maybe it's because we've reached the final days and up until know I was hoping something would happen that would get us out of foreclosure, but that hasn't yet happened and we have to be out by Tuesday.

I don't know why it happened now but I have gone from being a bit sad about the lost but focusing on packing and thinking that their most be a bright side, a new begin to really feel the lost.  Maybe I was looking at the fact that the house has seen better days, we've had plumping problems for a while and last year a tree fell on the house and we haven't been able to get all of the repairs needed.  But for what ever reason I didn't cry back then, today it has hit me like a ton of bricks.   After the breakdown on the steps, I've been feeling very sad about the lost of the house.

I'm still feeling in this mourning state as I typed this.  I'm not sure what I will do with a place that has been an anchor for me for so long.

I should get back to work,  I found a webcam in the house and thought I tested it house and I thought I would test it out and I wasted hours just to find for some reason the mic isn't recording.  So I can make videos with no sound.

I also need to get some rest because I've been going since early this morning plus yesterday (tough yesterday was a lot more work)

Did Rick Santorum call Obama a Government N-word?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=nzyvo8SKa0M#t=2065s

click the video above and it sounds like Santorum called Obama half the n-word but stop himself in mid speech.

After the fact that Santorum stated he doesn't like bl... people and many wondering if he was about to say he doesn't like Black people (though he says he said Blah people) things don't look good for Santorum's chance to win his party's bid for President.

wait I can no longer watch CBC or TVO but I now can watch CTV?

I live in a state close enough to Canada that I used to be able to watch some Canadian channels.  That was until this month when the country finally made the switch to DTV and I no longer can watch many of the Canadian channels I used to watch (and by many I mean 2, CBC and TVO)

Now I don't know if the reason I can no longer watch those stations is either because things are set up so one can watch station in different countries (could be but I believe USA and Canada are using the same type of DTV format) or if I am no longer in range of those stations' signal (the Digital signal covers a shorter distance then analogue did)

But the odd thing is I just found out that CTV is still broadcasting an analogue signal and that I can actually get it (I don't remember being able to get it before)

From what I can tell CTV pretty much just plays mosty American shows, where as CBC and TVO had more Candian programs.  What this means is I am losing a lot of things I only could see on those station and getting a station where I can see shows that I can watch else where : (

Any one else tired of all this 9 11 stuff?

I know I was.   Now this isn't to say  I don't think we should be talking about what happened, it's just that for over the past two weeks 9/11 was really heavily covered.   Hopefully next time they wont start talking about 9/11 so soon so people don't get 9/11 fatigue.

But looking back on what I have seen so far this remembrance of this tragedy was handled a lot better then I fear it might have being the tenth anniversary of that horrible day.  I fear we would be bombard with people trying to cash in on the tragic event.  I fear that we would be seeing commercials for things like 9/11 plates or gold coins.

I also feared that we would see an increase of hate toward people that happened to be Arabs and or Muslims.  But from what I can tell that hasn't happened (or at least it hasn't increase form what ever the average level of hate we have seen over the last few years)

I Am The Kind Of Democrat Who Is ALL IN For President Obama

A lot of people think Obama hasn't done much in office but if you really look at it Mr. 44 has really done a lot in his time in office.

what should be are response to black images in the media

Black images in the media is something that for a long time have been more negative then positive. As an African American it gets really annoying to see the same old stereotypes about us shown over and over again without much if any countering images.

It's natural and right that we speak out against the negative images we see of us shown in the media but sometimes I wonder if we go to far or the very least should we focus more on getting hollywood to show a wider ranger of images of Blacks or better yet support indy media that have a wide range of black images instead just attacking something that might be close to being strereotype.

i ask this because the days of in your face stereotypes are nearly over and the common stereotypes we see in the media aren't as in your face as some white guy in black face but we still have plenty of stereotypes that come from that still at play to day and because of that I notice people jumping at anything that has the hint of cooning, wither it be slapstick, low brow humor and a number of other things forms on comedy I like almost as much as I like wit and smart hight brow comedy.

And I've been thinking about the success of Tyler Perry, on one hand I am very proudd of him for his success and look up to him as a business man in the media field and think people should really look at the way he handled his business and how he built his media empire but on the other hand I realize if it wasn't for the preaching god part of his more people will be getting on him for bring out moves that are in the same vain as how high or booty call. The later a film I liked when I was in high school but not that it's not really positive images of black people.

saw some picttures of my dad to day for the first time

ok I saw some pictures of my father on facebook today. may not be big news for most but that was the first time I actually saw the man.

It's a little that the first time I see what my father looks like it would be on facebook. I never thought that would happen.

The photos included an old 70's picture of him and I guess a more recent picture and some group photos with him in it.

empty life

recently I've been having the feeling that my life is pretty empty. That I am wasting my time doing the things I do on a daily bases.

But I have no ideal what I should be doing instead.

My Computer's fixed

Yeah man. After nearly a month without my computer I finally got it back.

I am so happy because even though I realized in the month without it that I waste a lot of time on it, I noticed that there are a few things I really needed it for and I am happy that I have and can get started on some projects.

4 dollars a day

you know one of the things about falling on hard times is realising how close you are to be better off but you seem to come to a hump you need to get over.l

for me it's money. with all the things i'm doing online to make some cash one would think it easy to make $4 a day but that's not the case. and if my sites just made 4 bucks a day i'd have enough to cover my bill.

Wii facing competion or is kinect and ps3 move the best thing for it.

Well some of the big news from E3 is that both Microsoft and Sony are adding motion controllers to their current game system.

It's clear this is to take on Nintendo's Wii which may not be as big of a hit with hardcore games but is actually the top selling system world wide thinks to casual fans and hardcore nintendo fans.

Now at first one would think the fact that with xbox 360 and the ps3 getting motion controls (the kinect and move) one would think that it will cut into the wii's sales.

and it may draw in some people who wouldn't buy those system.

But these new motion controls may not help as much as some think.

first game system ad on often aren't often super popular (unless they are bundled with the system)

and second on of the problems with the wii is that developers haven't focused good games (or at least those aimed at hardcore gamers) for the wii. This may change because all systems having motion control it's easier to make games that use similar controls across all three platforms.

So in other words Microsoft and Sony maybe helping nintendo in the area they currently are weakest in right now, winning over hardcore gamers with a wave of 3rd party games aimed at them.

I ran across this at like 1am. First time hearing Nikki Lynette but I like what I hear.

Cee-Lo Green and Lupe Fiasco have each drop some hot mix tapes

Here is pretty hot Lupe Fiasco mixtape before there where Lasers.

It should be noted that hip-hop as we know it actually came after lasers. which was theorized by Einstein in 1917 and proven to be real by Rudolf W. Ladenburg in 1928. Hip-hop came around in the 70's.

And here's the even hotter Cee-Lo mixtape Stray Bullets

Once again Obama makes history.

Something just shank in today for me about this Healthcare law.

The first Black President of the United States (and first woman to be speaker of the house) has done something other presidents have been trying to do for a long time...pass healthcare reform.

It may not be as good as I wanted but at least it's a nice first step

Thursday, March 04, 2010

I just read an article about the fact that it is expected that wii sells will go down this year. That's not surprising everything has to stop at some point and this includes wii's high sales.

What I found interesting is that there are game publishers who state they aren't haven't manage to sell games well on the wii and that they won't focus so much on wii games. The publishers talked about in the article where EA, Capcom, THQ and Ubisoft.

A person form EA said that the Wii market was unpredictable. Part of me thinks what that means is they haven't really figured out how to sell to people who may have bought the wii that aren't really big gamers.

But then I remember that many gamers dislike the wii because they can't find many games aimed at them. So the problem isn't the game companies making games for gamers on a system they don't want, because the reason games are unhappy with the wii is because they don't have enough games to make them happy.

So I looked at a few of these companies sites to see what are they selling for the Wii and it looks go me that the problem is these companies aren't really putting out compelling games out on the system. At least there aren't many games that look like something I would want.

EA had the most attention paid to them in the article so I looked at their site to see the what they had for the wii and noticed only a few games that appealed to me. Though they did have a number of things I think would have sold well even if I don't care to much for them (sports games and sims related stuff)

They also have a game similar to wii sports and I think the problem there is that I am sure someone with wii sports won't fell the need to get another game similar to one they already have. Remember a big chunk of wii owners aren't games. There's a lot of older folks who got a wii for things like wii fit and wii sports. I can't help but remember when I was a kid and I wanted say a new edition of a sports game or street fighter II my mom would turn and say well you already have game like that why would you want another? I can see a lot of older wii owners taken that mindset...heck as I have gotten older I'm taking that mindset more and more.

I found similar problems across the board. The Wii has an odd mix of games, there are many tie games to stuff like game shows (There is a biggest loser game...really who would want that game) and of course lots and lots of kids games. Which makes sense giving that another big group of wii owners are kids, but the problem with having such a huge focus on this market is that kids don't buy games their parents or other adults do and I can see a bigger limit on the over all sales one can make to kids then to adults.

Now on one hand I think it's good that the companies are putting out games in hopes of drawing in more people then just hardcore gamers. It reminds me a bit of the days of the NES when we had a wide range of games, the problem is that just like back in the 80's a lot of those game being pushed out on the wii don't really look that good and back then everything was pretty much released on the NES good or bad, games for hardcore games and causal gamers. The wii just seemed to aim at the causal games and forgotten about the hardcore gamers.

I'm all for making games for causal gamers but a lot of these games don't really look that good.

I'm also surprised by the fact that some of the biggest gaming publishers didn't sell some of their biggest properties on the wii.

But what really sticks out is that even thought these comapanies say they are having a hard time selling games looking at the top selling games (at lets those listed on this wiki page) The wii has some of the highest sells figures of any game system, EVER. now it's true that it's Nintendo the company that putting out most of the high selling games on the wii and I think it's do to the reasons I listed. These are good games, they use their biggest characters and a lot of companies are just copying what the big N puts out (why get another multi sports mini games game when you already have wii sport and wii fit? And how many party games can someone really play?)

also looking at the top selling games on different platforms their seems to areas that publishers can focus on that Nintendo either doesn't really have covered or seem like there is room to grow the market for on the Wii. Like a sandbox adventure game (like grand thief auto), fighting games (wii has super smash bros but I'm shocked capcom doesn't have a Street Fighter game for the wii...the closet is is Capcom vs some group of characters popular in Japan but haven't really crossed over to America much.), etc, etc.

Is it the shoes? It's gotta be the shoes

I've been missing around with Zazzle and created some shoes.

The first pair of shoes I did used drawing I already had on Zazzle (made ties with it) which was a nerdy skull and crossbones type joint.

I used it to design a pair of pink sneakers.

Next I have a pair of shoes with my name and a drawing of me on them. Hopefully I'll become a line that everyone wears. Like Jordon's.

Right now I'm just fulling around but more will more then likely becoming.

so far Zazzle only has kids and womens shoes. Which is OK but I would like a pair of my own shoes.

So if you like what you see or just want to give me money go ahead and buy something.

Note to the Bad Robot crew about Star Trek sequel

Well there has been some news that J.J Abrams will be working on a sequel to Star Trek soon (movie expected to come out by 2012).

I felt that since the movie hasn't been written yet I would share my view on some things they should try to do for the next movie, just in the off chance that someone working at Bad Robot will see this post (I figure there is a 1 in a zillion chance of this happening)

When the J.J Abrams Star Trek movie came out there where plenty of Trekkies talking about a sequel. One of the common things I heard/read people say they wanted in the next movie was to see Khan.

Personally I say this is a bad ideal. Why? Because everyone seems to be expecting to see the return of Khan.

People wanting to see the return of Khan ties into the next thing I noticed people saying they want and that is to see nuTrek redoing stuff from old Star Trek show. I think when we are looking at stories that are redoing themselves that fans would want to see how stories would turn out in the new setup. But I don't think this is what should be done in this alternate time line or at least not yet. Since in the new reality we are following a Kirk and Enterprise crew that are active much earlier then the events in the first Star Trek TV show, So this crew wouldn't run into many of the events they ran into on the show or at least not until a later part of their voyage.

But if for some reason Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman want to reuse old Star Trek stories I would I would like to see them redo the pilot episode but with Kirk instead of Pike or for that matter any of the other Pike stories (they have a series of Pike era books.) Or if you are going to do stories tied to the show try to do stories that have events that happened before the show started. For example there are episode dealing with people that have crashed on some planet years before the Enterprise find them do a story where the Enterprise finds them before they would have in the normal show or maybe even prevent the events that would have happened on the show.

So I said what I don't want to see what do I want to watch. Well basically I want to see something new and good.

I wouldn't mind seeing more effects of Nero and Spock going back in time. For example it's stated that Nero was held prisoner by Klingons, that means that the Klingons had access to tech from over a hundred years in the future. I think it would be interesting that in this Star Trek-verse we follow an Federation that has to deal with Klingons more advanced techinolgy then they would have normally.

also with Vulcans being an endangered species I can easily see story ideals dealing with a Vulcan(s) going to extremes to try and repopulate the race.

oh and I wouldn't mind seeing tribbles

2010

hmmm...yet another christmas

Well it's Christmas as of 25 minutes ago (as I write this)

It's odd how such a day that people try to make so joyous can be just the opposite.

I think it's because we are expect to put so much into the holiday.

It's nice to exchange gifts, you get a nice feeling when someone is happy with the gift you got them. But the fact that on this day someone is going to give you a gift, there can be pressure to try and get that person a gift as well.

Some may stress out trying to find the prefect gift others maybe down because they don't have enough money to get someone something.

Some of the later may go in debt because they just put everything on their credit card and they will be stressed all year trying to pay it off.

Christmas is also a time to be with loved ones, your family of course there maybe those you don't really want to see for one reason or the other.

Not so fast with that sale of the Silverdome

Recently the city of Pontiac Michigan had an action to sell the Silverdome (a football stadium that the Lions used to play at from 1975 to 2002 for those who didn't know) the winning bid was to an unnamed Canadian company (with plans of turning the Silverdome to a soccer stadium) for the really low price of $583,000.

Silverdome so cheaply is because they haven't done much with it since the Lions left and it cost the city over a $1 Million a year for the up keep of the building. The city is already is in debt and saving a $1 million a year would be a great thing for the the city.

So this sale is a good thing...sadly it looks like it might not be a GOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL. It seems that last year the Pontiac City Council approved the sale of the Silverdom for $17 million to Silver Stallion Development Corp to turn the silverdome into a casino racetrack. But at the time the Mayor of Pontiac vetoed the sale because he didn't think Silver Stallion Development Corp president and CEO H. Wallace Parker could come up with the funding to actually pay for the Silverdome. Now H. Wallace Parker has came back with a vengeance getting a court order to stop the sale of the Silverdome to the Canadian company.

Crain's Detroit
is reporting that Parker says the reason his bid was turned down was racial discrimination. But He and then Mayor Clarence Phillips are both Black. Either Crain's report just assumed that the bias in this qoute from Parker...

“The defendant mayor openly expressed a bias against the plaintiff and in favor of our bid competitors,” Parker wrote in the complaint, referring to Pontiac Mayor Clarence Phillips. “He shared that bias openly so as to jeopardize the plaintiff’s ability to maintain funding for the project.”

...was racial.

Giving as I stated the key players are Black I'd have to say whatever bias Phillips has against Parker probably isn't racial (though I guess there is some chance Phillips is full of self hate.)

Maybe Phillips was right and Parker doesn't actually have a way of paying for all this, Parkers plains are big and would cost a lot of money, plus even if he did have the money he would have to get all the paper work to make it happen and it hard to say if the state would approve of his plans. Or maybe Phillips just didn't want a racetrack/casino in the city, there is always fear of what a gambling establishment will have on the community it is in and Pontiac isn't really doing so well right now and doesn't need the negatives that could come from a racino. Or maybe there's another factor that I am not a were of.

Fly advertising

below is a marketing campaign by Jung von Matt, a marketing agency did at the Frankfurt book convention

they attached little banners on to flies and let them fly around

this ideal is truly unique (I mean really who would have thought of using flies to advertise a product) and is giving them lots of buzz. I would think a lot more buzz then the people that actually read those tiny little signs. Though watching the video as many people looked to see what the banner says as they where people that where bugged by it.

Happy Birthday day Nintendo

that right today is Nintendo's anniversary. The company has been around for 120 years.

what you say how can a video game company been around for 120 years, when video games haven't been around that long. simple they didn't start out as a video game company they started out as a card game company in Japan.

Paris Jackson smacks the world with reality of the King of Pop

I have some people state that they where displeased about Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris Jackson, speaking at her fathers memorial.

I feel these people are in bad taste.

1. it was her father's memorial she has much more right to be up their then half the people singing.

2. I think the real reason those who where upset about her speaking, where displeased because they have to come with the cold hard truth that Michael Jackson, even with all the crazy stories about him and his insane level of fame, was a human being that was also a dad.

we where all enjoying the acts that performed and the famous that gave speeches at MJJ's memorial. But it seems that some lost sight of the fact that Michael was a man and had a family that loved him and the tearful words of young Paris Jackson smacked that truth into the face of the world.

re: Open letter to Repubs

So a guy I know online is trying to save the Republican party.

He's hoping to get a lot of views to a letter he has on his site (Progressive Republicans) asking for the parties leadership to look at it self and for Republicans to stop attacking each other.

I disagree with the later part. The people in the Republican party need to dish out their issues. If the party can't stand infighting then I think it's too weak to survive

if the party dies, I think sooner or later a new party will come and replace the Republican party (just as the Republicans replaced the Whigs)

But with out the infighting I don't think they will get to a point where the party can change it, because everyone will just follow lock step over the issues that the party already runs under. which are the same issues that the party is following to its down fall.

Better of Ted (funniest TV show on the air)

I'm surprised reading a few article that say the new ABC show Better of Ted is doing poorly in the ratings.

why am I shocked...because it is one of the funniest shows on TV.

I'm not sure why people haven't tuned into the show yet, maybe the ads for the show didn't draw people in. or maybe because it came on midseason many people are already locked in their TV watching patterns.

if you haven't checked out the show yet I ask you to try it out (it's on Wednesdays at 8:30 EST on ABC)

at the least you should watch the show for the comic scientist duo of Phil and Lem

or for the boss played by Portia De Rossi (of Alley McBeal and Arrested Development fame)

Pontiac, MI may get high speed rail

recently there has been some news that the stimulus plan has money set aside that may go to a few high speed rail networks across the nation.

one of these hubs is in the Midwest, where a number of Midwestern link to Chicago. Now when I saw this on the news they said that one of the lines will link the Chi to the D (that's Detroit) but reading more detailed there will also be a high speed drop to Pontiac.

This is great news and hopefully the money will come to make this happen. Because I admit being bias, I like the ideal of a stop in Detroit, but hearing that there is one planned for Pontiac is even better.

Now with the news of a high speed rail line that will bring people in from all over the Midwest I also hope this pushes Michigan politicians to upgrade the rest of the state public transportation system (or you know actually have one outside of buses)

are we seeing the end of wii madness?

that what some people are saying due to the fact that last month, the PS3 out sold the Wii in Japan.

I don't know if I wouldn't put Wii in the grave because of this news. The Wii has been at the top for a long time (selling like gangbusters) and it makes since that sooner or later there would be some slow down.

Gamasutra has a post up about the fact that over half of the wii sales are for Nintendo's game and music games and because it's easy to port games between the the PS3 and 360 it best to make games for those system and not the Wii

and that is where I think the Wii's problems lie. It was a smart move to make a gaming system that people not hard core gamers can enjoy playing and kids. Heck it worked back in the day win the NES. The problem with those markets is they don't naturally buy as many games as the adult hardcore gamer and that the market that PS3/360 picked up and Wii didn't and with the bad economy the non hardcore gamer is less likely to spend money on games.

why? because the types of games many "hardcore gamers" want ended up on the other system.

The thing is the wii's problem isn't 100% Nintendo's fault. a big problem is that 3rd party publishers didn't make games for gamers for the Wii, many focused on the other systems and mostly made games for kids and such for the wii.

Now I'm not one of those that thinks Wii should just market it self to the hardcore gamer but I feel the system could do a better job of walking and chewing gum at the same time. If Big N doesn't want to change it's focus on the games it makes, fine. but it might be wise for them to point out what the system has for hardcore gamers, as well as try to push 3rd party developers to look at the wii when they make "gamer games"

I may have been to hard on my mayor

on my last post I talked about the fact that the city of Pontiac maybe taken over by the state (which has now happened)

I pointed out the fact that giving the city is expected to be $5 to $7 million debt next year. Which is bad but before the current Mayor took office the city had a about a $37.1 million budget debt

now I feel a little bad for the mayor, even thought the city is in bad shape, at least in terms of being in debt (thought there are other points I disagree with the mayor on) we are in better shape then we where a few years ago but the truth is he hasn't turned the city around enough to actually be in a good situation.

Gov. Granholm takes over the city of Pontiac

My hometown of Pontiac, MI has been going through financial troubles for a while now.

Well now it is seen to be so bad that Jennifer Granholm has declared the city a state of emergency and may appoint someone to manage the cities assets.

shocking, but honestly I doubt they can run things worst then the people in charge of the city already are.

The mayor of Pontiac says
“We weren’t aware we were in any special trouble,”

he also thinks the city will have a $5 to $7 million deficit next year.

Hey Mayor Philips I think that is a sign that the city is in trouble!

maybe having special attention from the governor could be a good thing for the city. as the state tries to turn it self around, maybe we will be seen as one of the key places needed for improvement.

I think scammers are trying use Obama's stimulus plan to trick people

I just got a phone call with a recorded message talking about a debt restructuring plan, but unlike other messages of this nature they are using the stimulus plan that was recently past as a hook, by saying that this restructuring plan is part of the stimulus package.

attack of the living dead social networking site: friendster

I had open a friendster account way back when that was the popular networking site, that I have used in ages.

but it seems like every other day I get an email saying someone wrote me a message or sent a friend request and I check it to see if it's someone I know/knew and it always spam.

what I wonder is does anyone actually still use friendster that isn't a spam bot zombie?

Obama's inaugiration speech ushers in a new era

watching Obama give his inauguration speech it, is clear that we are entering an era of change.

Not only because of the fact that America has now sworn in it's first Black president, but the words Obama spoke show that he will run much differently form the presidents before him in the last few decades.

if his words ring true we will see an America that works with other nations instead of against.

an America that will push for the environment. a nation that will not only be green but responsible for the resources it takes form this earth.

No longer will we let our economy run wild without regulations.

No longer are we in an era where the people running our government seem to loath the office and responsibilities they hold and demand government be smaller.

no instead we will enter an era where government looks and see how well they are running, it not about small or big governments it's about governments that work.

This looks to truly be a great day for the nation

local press goes faux gangsta?

I came across this interesting article talking about the reporting about gangs in the city of Pontiac.

or to be correct the post really talks about how the city doesn't have what it calls a true gang problem.

hey Adobe lower your prices

I was thinking about buying Adobe CS4 design program but man at $1,300 the programs in that package cost way to much money for me.

even if I just but the programs I want/need I will still end up paying about that much money.

maybe adobe should think about lowering it's prices for poor artist.

at the very least have a short of rent to own choices. so artist can pay a little at a time. though my luck if you did this by the time I finish paying CS5 will be out

OMG it just hit me...Obama won

I know, I know delayed reaction and all.

but the truth is is watching Obama win Tuesday I was mixed with emotions. on one hand i was glad that he won. Not only because he is, will be the first Black president but because he is the first person I voted for and won the presidency and will be going to the white house.

that last bit is the important part because, the emotion I had was that I was a afraid we would face another 2000 like event and the the news casters would take back that win and say the other guy had. it.

But now it is hitting me, it really happened and no one found away to take it back.

Barack Obama is the 44th Prez of the U.S.

I was watching a few news reports talking about Obama and a tear came rolling down my eyes. that didn't happen to me on Tuesday night, I was close but still now waterworks.

I'm still a bit in a daze over all this.

Why do marketers feel they most make every thing fun?

I was just listen to an ad on the radio for a computer repair place.

In the ad they had people saying how much they like the service. One of the people, an older sounding guy said that he watch them fix and was having a ball doing so.

now I have to ask how boning is this guys life (or how boring do the advertisers think our lives are) to think that watching your computer get fixed is fun.

and this isn't the only time I've seen/heard ads that try to make boring things (that we need or need done) sound fun.

instead of making things sound fun why not just tell how good your product/service is.

McCain is using his age well during the debates

watching the debates right now and I can't help but notice that even thought people thought that maybe because of the age differences between Obama and McCain, Obama would have an advantage because he is younger and healthier looking (like what happened in the JFK vs Nixon debates)

but I have to hand McCain at least a point for trying play up his age by basically saying Obama doesn't understand blah blah blah.

of course Obama troughs out facts showing that he clearly knows what he is talking about.

but still I think McCain stratagy may play will with older voters, since who feel like they are dealing with know it all whippersnappers.

Obama needs change and a few dollar bills as well!!!

I have decide to take a active inactive role in helping Obama became the next President of the united states of America by being one of his fundraise.

I set a small goal of $200. this is the first time I have done anything like this so I wanted to set a small bar. If I meet it I'll do it again and set the bar higher.

wow I'm getting old

I noticed a few weeks ago that I have grey hairs in my beard.

today my brother noticed them. but it wasn't like he noticed them when he was standing near me...no he spoted them when he was standing on the other side of the living room.

Saturday, May 31, 2008

They had their chance to let the Michigan voters voice to be heard.

This Saturday the Democratic party is holding it’s committee meeting to try and figure out what to do with the Florida and Michigan delegates.

I’m from Michigan and I know more about this state’s situation much more then I know about Florida’s so I’m just going to focus on the big mitten.

It seems that right now the Florida delegates are ok with the plan to only have half their votes count, where as the Michigan delegates want all there votes counted.

I didn’t catch who said it but I heard on the radio some guy (a MI delegate) say that they are fighting for this so Michigan voters can be heard.

All I have to say is…hold up!

The Michigan government has had their chances to make sure our vote is counted and they screwed them up.

First off this whole miss is there fault. They choice to move the election up, not the citizens of Michigan. No one turned to me and asked “yo, Martin mind if we move our primaries up?”

They then jacked things up again when they let the deadline to issue a revote slip by.

If they really wanted the Michigan voters voice count then they would have worked over time to get that done…but there lazy butts just let it go.

What I think the Michigan delegates are fighting to make sure the people of Michigan get who they want in office but instead they are fighting to get whoever they want in office.

If we had a recount and Obama’s name was on the ballot unlike in the Michigan primaries I think the out come would be vastly different.

A lot of people didn’t vote because they where told (by our local news media) that there vote wasn’t going to count.

This is the first of a news series of post I am going to be running on this blog looking at ads. More precisely, I will be talking about and dissecting them and more then likely do a bit of mocking…ok a lot of mocking

The first up is this ad that appeared in an issue of the comic book Flash with the print date of January 02, for Starburst candy.

Ok after reading the ad I guess we are supposed to think that this young lady rammed a bunch of starburst in her mouth. But looking at the picture and I am not sure about that.

This girl looks like she has gone mad. Just look at her eyes. It is clear that this young woman has gone mad. Now the question is did she go mad and just rammed a fist full of Starburst in her mouth or does Starburst candy drive people insane. If the later I’m just going to stick to Now & Laters.

But honestly the first thing I thought when I saw her eyes, is that this is the face a sheer terror. Did she really just try to eat a handful of Starburst or did someone forced them down her throat. That’s right I think this poor girl was really flogged to death. I don’t know why a company would run this ad in a comic book no less but it is clear that someone forced feed Starburst to this girl to the point that they just spill out of her.

Because of this ad I haven’t bought a pack of starburst for over 5 years. Sure if someone offers me a piece I may take it but I can’t spend money on a company that places snuff ads in comics.

What to do about the horror at Dunbar Village

I don’t know if you have heard of the news story about a woman that was gang raped by a bunch of teenagers and then made to perform oral sex on her own son. It wasn’t a story that really made a splash in the national news, because there where other stories that the media thought where more important such as Paris Hilton going to jail, Nichol Richie being with child, Mick Vick cruelty to animals, etc.

But the story has been talked about on the web and has sparked much outrage. And rightfully so. The horror of this story doesn’t end with the fact that this woman and her son where raped, but continues with the fact that none of her neighbors cared enough to lift a hand to help her. They did nothing, no one came to her rescue will she was being raped, no called the police or called an ambulance for her. She and her son had to walk to the nearest hospital, even with the fact that they had bleach poured into their eyes.

One would think this is the type of event that would spark outrage in it community but as stated the people in Dunbar Village couldn’t seem to careless. The people of that community have been dealing with such a high crime rate that many have seemed to have lost their humanity.

Reading the articles that quoted people saying things like “so what a woman got raped, crime happens here all the time” shocked me nearly as much as the crime itself.

Luckily as I stated earlier even if the people living the Dunbar Village projects are outrage enough to do anything to either help this woman or to make sure things like this doesn’t happen again there are people on the net that have decided to try and do something about this.

Well at least one person the net is. The woman running blog whataboutourdaughters.blogspot.com has started a campaign to try and get people that are either seen as or call themselves leaders of the black community to pick up the cause on this event.

I commented on her blog that I think that there are better ways to try and do something about this besides trying to get these guys on board to do something. In fact she has a list of leaders and ways to contact them or their orgs. Maybe it’s just me but I think that to many people think that only these people are in a position to help the black community, and over look are on power.

I didn’t know at the time I made the comment what else should be done but after sometime thinking about it have thought of a few more things to do beside trying to get the leaders to take action (and try to get other people to do something)

First of after I thought about it is a good ideal to contact the Black leaders, but that is only a start.

Second I think we should also contact our local congress person and asked them to reinstate funding for the security of are nations housing projects.

3rd contact the media about this story. The media covers stories that they think will get them ratings (it’s why we get so many stories about celebrities) if they know we want to hear about this story they will cover it more. If the story is in the news a lot people (including the black leaders) might be more likely to take action

Why are small business over looked in plans to rebound economies?

Nearly half of American jobs in the private sector are with small companies. Yet it seems when states to small towns are trying to are trying to find something to save their economy they don’t look to build or help small business they look to bring an outside source either giving deals to big companies or building a prison.

In fact when certain types of big business come are many local business end up going out of business. For example Wall-Mart causes a lot of mom and pop stores to close, Starbucks takes out local coffee shops even McDonald’s shut down local eateries.

And with the cause of Wallmart the jobs don’t really pay that well. And by not paying well I not talking about it pays enough to get by but I wish I had a little more so I can get some cool stuff. I’m talking about people working but still need welfare to help them make it.

It doesn’t really make sense since one would think that the smartest thing to do is pass laws that will help the little guy thrive.

Of course it doesn’t have to be an either/or. If a town/city/state is looking to boost it’s economy by trying to woo big companies in prisons they should make sure that they have it in place that they will only allow the company or prison to operate if they have to help local small business in someway. For example a prison should be made to get 50% of their supplies from local companies, etc.

Along with more and more people spending more of their money at local small business this could really be something that could be a real catalyst to bring economies to big heights. Because the economy wont just increase because local business have a good deal with what ever the out side source is (nor the fact that that source will should also hire local people.) But the fact that those business and the people working in them (and the people working at the big companies/prison complex/whatever) will have more income (or more people will have income) to spend. If spent local that just means an increase of revenue for small business.

The economy how does it still stand

The other day I saw reports saying that customer confidence has been on the raise. Which puzzles me, giving that last week the stock market had such a huge drop, the prices of goods have gone up and let’s not talk about gas and milk. And there is also the job market which (at least where I am at) is horrible.

Ok the stock market dive is a recent event and wouldn’t effect the people in that study. In fact the stock market has been doing really well even though much of the gains where whipped out last week. But the other factors would still be in play.

Maybe someone out in the wonderful world of the internet can’t tell me what everyone else sees that makes them think the economy is good that I don’t.

Giving that that value of the dollar and hence are economy is based so much on what people think I wonder what the future well hold. Well the economy have a big down turn because people look at the stock market, all the new homeless people that lost their homes because they couldn’t pay their sub-prime mortgage, sky rocketing prices on consumer goods and staples like food, milk and gas. Or well we be able to keep the economy going by people doing what they have been doing for some time…say the economy is doing great so people feel like everything is good and spend, spend, spend.

Of course I think the by the time the next report on consumer confidence comes out I think the raise in the minimum wage should be in effect and maybe people well fell good about the economy for a reason I can understand…they’ll have a little more money in their pockets then they did during the last study.

America is Back?

I was just watching an Obama speech on C-span and I am starting to see why there is so much hype around the guy. He has away to sweep you away with his words, bring up things that many people miss because of the way the current president is running things. Things like habeas corpus or even talking with other countries to get things done.

Funny thing is that he even drop a line that popped in my head some time ago that I think who ever wins the 2008 election should use as slogan…”America is back”

I still think it is to early to say if I want to get behind the guy but I have to say that for the most part he has been cementing his place near the top of my list.

rebuild New Orleans green

The other night (Monday) I was watching the Tavis Smiley show’s first part in a series on the victims of hurricane Katrina that have moved back to New Orleans to try and rebuild there lives. Watching people talk about the hard time they had getting things like power in their area I begin to wonder why there isn’t more being done not only to rebuild the city but to make it even better.

Now when I say make it better I don’t mean the way that many in the city fear, ie tearing down the mostly Black areas and either building housing that many of the original residents can’t afford or make it to boutique town. What I was thinking was to rebuild the city so house are more ecologically friendly.

Maybe I’m only thinking this because I noticed a lot news about green tech recently. But think about it, when this documentary was being filmed a lot of people where living in areas with no powers. It made me wonder what if people and companies got together to help rebuild peoples home with things like solar panels. People in areas that government doesn’t feel is populated enough to worry about trying to get energy to can at least generate their own.

Know if a company wonders why should install homes with any renewable energy set for free, the answer is simple. You can use the people that you give help to as public relations and also for advertisement. Your company will look really good if you can run ads saying “WHATEVER CO. helped the Jenkins family of New Orleans get the power they need to rest their lives” or something to that affect.
